** Although the weekend has taken place, we have kept this information on the website for general interest. **
The 2019 weekend is taking place from Friday 7th-Sunday 9th June. We are returning to the Cotswold View site that we visited in 2016. It’s located between Charlbury and Enstone, and as in previous years we will offer a ride out on the Friday afternoon, a choice of two rides on the Saturday and a return ride on the Sunday. For those of you who were on the 2016 weekend, there is so much great cycling available that we won’t need to repeat much of what we did then. We are planning to have a picnic on the Friday night and we will eat out on the Saturday night.
Provisional programme (as at 1st May)
Friday 7th June
Meet outside Costa Coffee in Summertown at 2pm, aiming to start at 2.15pm (which means we should get away by 2.30pm). The route to Charlbury is 22 miles long and undulating but not really hilly. We will start by riding to Woodstock where we may stop for refreshments. We will then continue north and west to arrive in Charlbury via minor roads through the Ditchley Park Estate. The ride leader will be Liz Weekes.
There may be a group start later and riding out faster, but this will depend whether there is demand and someone willing to lead.
We will aim to have a picnic when we arrive, based around the pods. If it rains, we will have to improvise, and we have Karen’s Cottage and a number of rooms to make use of. People can buy food at M&S in Summertown (if they arrive early!) or the Co-op in Charlbury.
Saturday 8th June
On this ride we will head to Daylesford for coffee along Sustrans route 442. The ride will then continue in the direction of Chastleton House where, if the weather is fine, we can have a picnic in the grounds. Teas are also available in the Church. If there is sufficient interest we can look round the house (National Trust, entrance £10.50 for non-members). We will return through the villages to Chadlington. The route will be taken at a “stop & stare” type pace and will be no longer than 25 miles. The leader is Lucy Tennyson.
The longer ride will begin by taking Sustrans route 442 through Taston, Spelsbury, Chadlington, Sarsden and onto Kingham. Here we will leave the route, heading along the B4450 through Bledington. Shortly before Stow, we will turn left onto a minor road through Maugersbury which will bring us into Stow for lunch on a quiet road. The afternoon will start by retracing back onto the B-road where will soon turn off to climb up to and through Icomb and up to the A424. At 220m above sea level, this is the high point of the day’s ride. After about ½ mile on the A-road, we turn to take lovely minor roads through Church and Nether Westcote, Idbury and Fifield before riding through Milton, Shipton and Ascott-under-Wychwood. We then climb up to the B4437 which we follow back to Charlbury. If the weather is half decent, the route should offer some fantastic views. Unfortunately there are no refreshment stops apart from lunch on the route, but we’ll carry stuff to eat and drink and stop often as the route is quite hilly. The ride is 34 miles long and the leader will be Ellen Lee.
The plan is to have a meal on Saturday evening at the Artyard Café in Enstone.
Sunday 9th June
We will leave at 10.30am and ride into Charlbury before picking up Sustrans route 442 through Cornbury Park (some off-road, but very scenic!). We will then make for Ramsden Garden Centre for coffee and then continue onto North Leigh where we plan a picnic in the churchyard. The ride leader will be Leonor Barroca.
As in previous years, there will be someone driving luggage out to the site, so it won’t be necessary to carry everything (unless, of course, you want to!). Details of luggage drop-off and collection points and times will be sent to participants nearer the time.
